A Seed of Compassion, A Harvest of Hope

At the heart of Sai Kripalu Foundation lies a deep commitment to nurturing human potential and fostering dignity. It is with this spirit that we share a story of transformation, a testament to the power of compassion in action, as recounted by Eleanor Nicholson, the visionary founder of High Jump.

Thirty-five years ago, a seed of empathy was sown. Eleanor, then Head of the Senior School at Latin, observed a group of bright, promising ninth-grade students, many from underserved communities. These young souls, brimming with potential, found themselves adrift in a new and unfamiliar environment. Despite their intelligence, their eagerness to learn, and the unwavering support of their families, they struggled to thrive. The academic rigor and the established social dynamics presented formidable challenges.

Eleanor recognized a profound need. These students possessed the inner light, the innate capacity to flourish, but they lacked the necessary preparation and support to navigate this new landscape. She understood that their success, and indeed the enrichment of the entire community, depended on bridging this gap.

Inspired by a shared vision with John Cotton, Principal at Francis Parker, a dream began to take shape – a comprehensive summer program designed to ignite a love of learning, cultivate curiosity, and build a strong sense of belonging. This program would provide not only academic enrichment but also opportunities for artistic expression and physical activity, nurturing the whole child.

With unwavering faith and a heartfelt proposal, they approached the Fry Foundation, seeking the resources to bring their vision to life. The response was one of profound generosity and understanding. The Fry Committee, with their open minds and compassionate hearts, recognized the transformative potential of this initiative and granted the necessary funding.

The Birth of a Dream

And so, with meticulous planning and boundless enthusiasm, the program was launched. Sixteen rising seventh graders, full of hope and anticipation, embarked on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. This was more than just an academic program; it was a sanctuary, a place where they could feel seen, heard, and valued.

A Legacy of Transformation

This story is a powerful reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can have a ripple effect, transforming lives and communities. It underscores the importance of providing opportunities for all individuals to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances. At Sai Kripalu Foundation, we are inspired by this spirit of compassion and are committed to creating a world where every human being is treated with dignity and respect, and where every seed of potential is nurtured to blossom.
