Before finding Cara Collective, she faced immense challenges. As a single mother of five, recently released from incarceration, she struggled to provide for her family, feeling overwhelmed and trapped in a cycle of despair. The future seemed bleak, offering only the prospect of dead-end jobs and continued hardship.
But destiny intervened. A chance encounter with a Cleanslate worker sparked a glimmer of hope, leading her to Cara Collective, a sanctuary of support and opportunity. Eighteen years later, she reflects on that pivotal moment with profound gratitude.
Unearthing Inner Strength Through Compassionate Guidance
Stepping into Cara Collective was an act of courage. Overcoming her introversion, she embraced the "Motivations and Transformations" classes. These sessions, guided by the gentle wisdom of Miss Vicki, became a catalyst for healing. Through compassionate listening and understanding, she was able to release long-held emotions, paving the way for newfound happiness and self-discovery.
The shared vulnerability within the Transformations class fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support. This experience prepared her to embark on a journey of personal and professional growth with Cleanslate.
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities for Service
Her first Cleanslate assignment brought her back to 47th Street, the very neighborhood where she had faced her past struggles. Fear and doubt threatened to overwhelm her, but the unwavering belief of Mr. Jesse, a mentor and guide, ignited a spark of hope. He reminded her that she was no longer defined by her past, but empowered by her present. This profound realization allowed her to embrace the opportunity to serve her community, cleaning the streets where she had once struggled.
Working at Cleanslate became an act of redemption, transforming a place of pain into a source of pride and purpose. She rose through the ranks, from Lead to Crew Supervisor, then Area Supervisor, finding joy in sharing the tools and wisdom she had gained at Cara Collective with new participants.

Today, she stands as a Senior Account Manager, a testament to the transformative power of compassion, opportunity, and unwavering belief in human potential. Her journey is a beacon of hope, inspiring us to continue our work at Sai Kripalu Foundation, empowering individuals to overcome adversity and create lives filled with dignity, purpose, and service.
